Turtles
Turtles in Hawaii - one of the most incredible places for sea turtle viewing in the world. In addition to the three species of sea turtle native to Hawaiian waters, the Hawkbills turtle, the Leatherback Sea Turtle, and the Green Sea Turtle, you can also occasionally see the Olive Ridley and Loggerhead Turtles.
Snorkeling with Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles
Honu, the green Hawaiian Sea Turtles are encountered often. They sleep in the crevices of the coral affording some protection. They are cold blooded, relying on environmental temperature to regulate body temperature. They breathe air which means they must surface to breathe. Sea turtles can be seen sunning on beaches in an apparent effort to warm up, and probably at times to avoid predators. They have scales on their skin. Unlike fresh water and land based turtles, sea turtles cannot retract their limbs, head, or tail into their shells.
When the boat is at rest you can see their heads pop up to take in breath and check out the human forms. They can be very curious and since having been protected they exhibit a more agressive curiosity towards us.
Turtle cleaning station - turtles dive to the reef and the tropical fish clean the limu, Hawaiian for seaweed, that grows on their shells. Captain Cook Snorkel is a great place to encounter the turtle in their habitat. Please do not touch or chase them, if you remain calm and still, they may approach you, as your touch could cause disease or damage. These magical, air breathing creatures are protected by Federal Law. If they are within an arms length you can hear them breath, this is an unforgettable experience.
